Airline transport pilot certificate (ATP)

The certificate every airline captain must hold. The FAA counts holders precisely — certificate plus valid medical — which makes the gap against airline employment unusually well measured.

No payback period — there is no cost figure to pay back. The premium is below.

Where no figure above could be verified we publish none rather than an estimate.

Why there is no cost figure here

Almost all flight training happens outside the federal student-aid system, so no government dataset records what it costs. The published numbers in circulation come from flight schools quoting their own prices, which is marketing rather than data. The FAA sets the hour requirement — 1,500 flight hours for the unrestricted certificate — and what those hours cost depends entirely on how you build them.

The binding requirement is 1,500 flight hours for the unrestricted certificate, reduced to 1,000 or 1,250 for graduates of approved degree programmes. Most people build those hours over years while working as flight instructors.

The certificate does not expire, but the medical certificate does, and losing it ends the career.

How many people hold this, and how many are working in the field

The number the pay figure leaves out

Of the 181,742 holders of an active airline transport pilot certificate ანგარიშები 2025, federal employment records account for 103,560 მუშაობენ იმ პროფესიებში, რომელთათვისაც შექმნილია. 57.0%. That leaves 78,182 holders it does not account for.

That gap is an upper bound, not an unemployment rate.

Both sides are standing counts. Holders on a date against employment in a period — the same kind of quantity, which is the only reason the two may be divided at all.

What that count includes: FAA counts an airman as active only when they hold both the certificate and a valid medical certificate, so lapsed and medically disqualified pilots are already excluded — which makes this a tighter count than most credential registries. Pilots are classed by their HIGHEST certificate, so nobody here is also counted among commercial pilots. It includes 1,795 holders whose airline transport rating is for helicopters only.

ნომინანტი: holders of an active airline transport pilot certificate = 181,742 (Standing count of people holding the credential, as at 31 December 2025) · FAA, US Civil Airmen Statistics 2025, Table 4 — Estimated Active Pilot Certificates Held · ხედები

Airline pilots are one of the few groups where the gap is easy to read: the certificate is held for life once earned, so it accumulates retired pilots, while the medical requirement removes those who can no longer fly. Corporate, cargo and government pilots also hold it and are counted under other occupations.

What it lets you do

The pay belongs to the job, not to the credential. These are the occupations it qualifies you for.

სამუშაო Is it required? მედიანი დაკავებული
Airline Pilots, Copilots, and Flight Engineers Legally required to hold the job $232,140 103,560

Does it pay for itself?

The job this unlocks pays a median of $232,140, წინააღმდეგ დასაქმების-წონასწორებული მედიანას $50,020 across every occupation we publish — a premium of about $182,120 a year before tax. We cannot turn that into a payback period, because no credible figure exists for what this costs to obtain — half of the calculation is real and published, and the other half we do not have.

Read that as a comparison to an average job, not to your job. What that baseline is, and what it leaves out

And it assumes you get the job. Every payback figure on this site is conditional on being hired into the work. That is the assumption the credential-holder count above exists to test, and it is the assumption every other pay site makes silently.

What you need before you start

  • A commercial pilot certificate and instrument rating
  • 1,500 flight hours, or 1,000-1,250 via an approved programme
  • A first-class medical certificate
  • Age 23

Do not do this if

  • you cannot hold a first-class medical certificate — everything else is irrelevant without it
  • you cannot fund several years of low-paid hour-building before the airline pay begins
