Commercial pilot certificate
The certificate that first lets you be paid to fly. Most holders are on the way somewhere else — instructing, building hours — which is exactly why the number holding it and the number employed as commercial pilots are so far apart.
No verified cost figure.
No payback period — there is no cost figure to pay back. The premium is below.
Where no figure above could be verified we publish none rather than an estimate.
Why there is no cost figure here
Flight training sits almost entirely outside federal student aid, so no government dataset records what reaching this certificate costs. We would rather show nothing than repeat a flight school's own price list as though it were data.
The FAA requires 250 flight hours, or 190 through an approved school. How long that takes depends on how often you can afford to fly.
The certificate does not expire; the second-class medical certificate it depends on does.
How many people hold this, and how many are working in the field
The number the pay figure leaves out
Of the 118,314 holders of an active commercial pilot certificate ანგარიშები 2025, federal employment records account for 47,630 მუშაობენ იმ პროფესიებში, რომელთათვისაც შექმნილია. 40.3%. That leaves 70,684 holders it does not account for.
That gap is an upper bound, not an unemployment rate.
Both sides are standing counts. Holders on a date against employment in a period — the same kind of quantity, which is the only reason the two may be divided at all.
What that count includes: Active means certificate plus valid medical certificate. Pilots are classed by their highest certificate, so anyone who has gone on to an airline transport certificate has left this count — these are people whose top qualification is the commercial certificate. Many of them are flight instructors, or are building hours towards an airline transport certificate, and federal employment data files both elsewhere.
ნომინანტი: holders of an active commercial pilot certificate = 118,314 (Standing count of people holding the credential, as at 31 December 2025) · FAA, US Civil Airmen Statistics 2025, Table 4 — Estimated Active Pilot Certificates Held · ხედები
The unaccounted-for figure is larger here than almost anywhere on this site, and most of it is not unemployment: flight instructors, agricultural pilots, corporate and charter pilots and hour-builders all hold this certificate and are counted under other occupations or not at all.
What it lets you do
The pay belongs to the job, not to the credential. These are the occupations it qualifies you for.
| სამუშაო | Is it required?
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial Pilots | Legally required to hold the job | $123,220 | 47,630 |
↑ BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2014.
Does it pay for itself?
The job this unlocks pays a median of $123,220, წინააღმდეგ დასაქმების-წონასწორებული მედიანას $50,020 across every occupation we publish — a premium of about $73,200 a year before tax. We cannot turn that into a payback period, because no credible figure exists for what this costs to obtain — half of the calculation is real and published, and the other half we do not have.
Read that as a comparison to an average job, not to your job. What that baseline is, and what it leaves out
And it assumes you get the job. Every payback figure on this site is conditional on being hired into the work. That is the assumption the credential-holder count above exists to test, and it is the assumption every other pay site makes silently.
What you need before you start
- A private pilot certificate
- 250 flight hours, or 190 via an approved school
- A second-class medical certificate
- Age 18
Do not do this if
- you expect this alone to get you an airline job — it will not; the airline certificate is a separate and much longer requirement
- you cannot hold a medical certificate
