Licensed practical nurse licence (LPN/LVN)
The shortest licensed route into nursing: about a year of training and a national exam, for work that pays roughly two-thirds of what a registered nurse earns.
Ko te utu hei whiwhi — te haurua o te awhe.
Mō ngā marama o te whakaakoranga, i te wā katoa. Ka roa ake te wā wātea.

He aha taua taupū utu, he aha kāore i te mea.
Read this figure with one caveat: the federal programme code it comes from, CIP 51.39, covers practical and vocational nursing together with nursing-assistant training, and at certificate level the two cannot be separated. That range is median cumulative FEDERAL LOAN DEBT at completion, not a tuition sticker price and not total cost. It is what completers actually borrowed, so it excludes grants, savings, family money, employer funding and living costs — which makes it a FLOOR on what the credential costs, never a ceiling. The low and high figures are the 25th and 75th percentiles across the institutions that report a figure for this programme, so a quarter of institutions sit below the low end. College Scorecard pools two award years into each figure; the release used here is dated 10 June 2026.
About a year full time at most schools, longer part time. The exam at the end is the NCLEX-PN.
Renewal is every one to two years depending on the state.

He aha te take o nga tāngata i oti te whakaakoranga?
E whā tau i muri i te oti — he whika mō te waehere papatono, ehara i te mea mō tēnei mahi anake.
Ko te mea 47,882 ngā tāngata i oti Practical nursing and nursing assistant training, undergraduate certificate or diploma Kāore anō rātau kia ako i te whā tau i muri mai, 2,047 Kāore i whiwhi i te moni i runga i te pūkete — 4.3%. Ko ērā i mahi i whiwhi i tētahi tauwaenga o te 100. $56,073, me te haurua o waenganui i waenganui $37,200 me $76,301.
Kāore he "whakahaere i te pūkete" e kore ana e "kore mahi".
Ko te mea e tautuhi ana te waehere papatono: CIP 51.39 puts practical and vocational nursing — the LPN/LVN route — in the same code as nursing-assistant and orderly training, and at certificate level the two cannot be separated. Those are very different qualifications: one is a licensed clinical role reached after about a year, the other is a few weeks of training for work that pays far less. This figure is both of them together, and the mix is not published, so it may not be read as the LPN figure.
The same code that blocks a clean cost figure blocks a clean outcome figure: practical nursing and nursing-assistant training share it, and the mix is not published. Read the rate as covering both.
