The fastest credential in emergency medicine and the clearest example of the problem this site exists to show: far more people hold it than are employed doing the work, and the pay is below the typical American job.

The National Registry publishes its exam fee but not the cost of the course, and federal programme-level data groups EMT training inside a broad allied-health code alongside unrelated programmes. A large share of the unaccounted-for holders are firefighters and police officers, for whom EMT certification is required or standard but whose jobs federal data files under a different occupation entirely. That share is not published anywhere, which is precisely why the gap below has to be read as a ceiling.
