Physical therapist licence
One of the cleanest pairings on this site: the licensing federation de-duplicates its count, so the number of licensed physical therapists and the number employed can be set side by side without guessing.
No verified cost figure.
Months of training, full time. Part time takes longer.
No payback period — there is no cost figure to pay back. The premium is below.
Where no figure above could be verified we publish none rather than an estimate.
Why there is no cost figure here
Federal programme data reports doctoral-level debt for CIP 51.23, which covers physical therapy and occupational therapy doctorates together and cannot be split. The blended figure runs from roughly $71,000 to $120,000 in federal loans at completion, but it is not a physical-therapy figure, so we do not present it as one and this page carries no cost.
The Doctor of Physical Therapy is three years of graduate study on top of a bachelor's degree, so seven years of higher education in total before the national licensing exam.
Licences renew every one to two years by state, with continuing competence requirements.
How many people hold this, and how many are working in the field
The number the pay figure leaves out
Of the 322,992 unique physical therapists holding an active US licence ანგარიშები 2025, federal employment records account for 267,330 მუშაობენ იმ პროფესიებში, რომელთათვისაც შექმნილია. 82.8%. That leaves 55,662 holders it does not account for.
That gap is an upper bound, not an unemployment rate.
Both sides are standing counts. Holders on a date against employment in a period — the same kind of quantity, which is the only reason the two may be divided at all.
What that count includes: De-duplicated individuals, which is unusual and is why this pairing is unusually clean: FSBPT matches licence records across jurisdictions, so a therapist licensed in four states is counted once rather than four times. Physical therapist assistants (134,457) are a separate licence and are not in this number. It counts everyone whose licence is active, including people not currently practising.

What happened to the people who finished the training
Four years after completing — a figure for the programme code, not for this job alone
Rehabilitation and therapy, doctoral degree and were no longer studying four years later, 119 had no earnings on record at all — 1.0%. The ones who were working earned a median of $82,893,
“No earnings on record” is not “unemployed”.
And this figure is not specific to this job. The federal government publishes programme outcomes at four-digit granularity and no finer, and this credential's programmes share their code with others. So the figure describes everyone who completed anything under that code at this level, not only the people who went on to do this work.
What that programme code covers: CIP 51.23 covers physical therapy, occupational therapy, therapeutic recreation, art and music therapy and rehabilitation counselling together. The doctoral row is mostly the Doctor of Physical Therapy alongside occupational therapy doctorates; the master's row is mostly occupational therapy and counselling. Physical therapy alone cannot be extracted from any of them, so none of these is the physical therapy figure.
The doctoral level of this code is the Doctor of Physical Therapy together with occupational therapy doctorates. It is the same blending that stops this page carrying a cost figure, so the outcome rate is a rehabilitation-professions figure rather than a physical-therapy one.
Who is in the cohort: 150 of them, recovering 89.0% of the Department's own national count for this programme. Dropping the smallest reporting programmes moves the rate by 0.0 პროცენტული წერტილები.

What it lets you do
The pay belongs to the job, not to the credential. These are the occupations it qualifies you for.
| სამუშაო | Is it required?
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical Therapists | Legally required to hold the job | $102,760 | 267,330 |
↑ BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2014.
Does it pay for itself?
The job this unlocks pays a median of $102,760, წინააღმდეგ დასაქმების-წონასწორებული მედიანას $50,020 across every occupation we publish — a premium of about $52,740 a year before tax. We cannot turn that into a payback period, because no credible figure exists for what this costs to obtain — half of the calculation is real and published, and the other half we do not have.
Read that as a comparison to an average job, not to your job. What that baseline is, and what it leaves out
And it assumes you get the job. Every payback figure on this site is conditional on being hired into the work. That is the assumption the credential-holder count above exists to test, and it is the assumption every other pay site makes silently.
What you need before you start
- A bachelor's degree with prerequisite science coursework
- A CAPTE-accredited Doctor of Physical Therapy programme
- A pass in the National Physical Therapy Examination
Do not do this if
- you are not prepared for graduate-level debt — this is a doctorate, priced like one
- you cannot handle the physical demands of moving patients daily
