Physician assistant certification (PA-C)
Two to three years of graduate study for pay that sits in the top tenth of US occupations — and one of the highest shares of credential holders actually employed in the work anywhere on this site.
No verified cost figure.
Months of training, full time. Part time takes longer.
No payback period — there is no cost figure to pay back. The premium is below.
Where no figure above could be verified we publish none rather than an estimate.
Why there is no cost figure here
No cost figure appears here, and the reason is the same one that blocks the radiography page. Federal programme data is published at four-digit granularity, and physician assistant studies sits inside CIP 51.09 alongside athletic training, anaesthesiologist assistant programmes and several other master's level allied-health courses. The blended figure runs to roughly $109,000 in federal loans at the median, and it is a figure about a group of programmes rather than about this one, so we do not present it as the price of becoming a PA. The outcome data below comes from that same shared code and is labelled accordingly.
Two to three years of full-time graduate study after a bachelor's degree and, at most programmes, a substantial number of documented patient-care hours before admission. The PANCE examination follows.
Certification runs ten years, with 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years and a recertification examination.
How many people hold this, and how many are working in the field
The number the pay figure leaves out
Of the 201,038 board-certified physician assistants ანგარიშები 2025, federal employment records account for 162,150 მუშაობენ იმ პროფესიებში, რომელთათვისაც შექმნილია. 80.7%. That leaves 38,888 holders it does not account for.
That gap is an upper bound, not an unemployment rate.
Both sides are standing counts. Holders on a date against employment in a period — the same kind of quantity, which is the only reason the two may be divided at all.
What that count includes: People holding current NCCPA board certification on that date, whether or not they are practising. 731 of them have addresses outside the United States or at military installations. It is not the cumulative figure NCCPA also publishes — more than 231,000 people have been certified since 1975 — because most of the difference is retirement and lapse, and using it would overstate the pool. Certification is not the same as a state licence, but every state requires it or accepts it as the basis for one.

One of the tightest pairings on the site. The remainder is mostly PAs working in roles federal data files under other occupations — administration, education, industry — plus people holding certification while not practising.
What happened to the people who finished the training
Four years after completing — a figure for the programme code, not for this job alone
Allied health diagnostic and treatment, master's degree and were no longer studying four years later, 166 had no earnings on record at all — 1.2%. The ones who were working earned a median of $127,347,
“No earnings on record” is not “unemployed”.
And this figure is not specific to this job. The federal government publishes programme outcomes at four-digit granularity and no finer, and this credential's programmes share their code with others. So the figure describes everyone who completed anything under that code at this level, not only the people who went on to do this work.
What that programme code covers: CIP 51.09 is the broadest code on this page and it is shared. Radiography, respiratory therapy, surgical technology, cardiovascular technology, sonography, perfusion, athletic training and physician assistant studies are all inside it, and the Department publishes no split. At associate level the code is dominated by imaging, respiratory and surgical technology; at master's level by physician assistant programmes, which is why the earnings jump. No figure here is specific to any one of those occupations and it must not be quoted as though it were.
The master's level of this programme code is dominated by physician assistant programmes, which is why the earnings figure is so much higher than the rest of the code. It is still not a PA-only figure and must not be quoted as one.
Who is in the cohort: 161 of them, recovering 83.6% of the Department's own national count for this programme. Dropping the smallest reporting programmes moves the rate by 0.0 პროცენტული წერტილები.

What it lets you do
The pay belongs to the job, not to the credential. These are the occupations it qualifies you for.
| სამუშაო | Is it required?
|---|---|---|---|
| Physician Assistants | Legally required to hold the job | $135,880 | 162,150 |

Does it pay for itself?
The job this unlocks pays a median of $135,880, წინააღმდეგ დასაქმების-წონასწორებული მედიანას $50,020 across every occupation we publish — a premium of about $85,860 a year before tax. We cannot turn that into a payback period, because no credible figure exists for what this costs to obtain — half of the calculation is real and published, and the other half we do not have.
Read that as a comparison to an average job, not to your job. What that baseline is, and what it leaves out
And it assumes you get the job. Every payback figure on this site is conditional on being hired into the work. That is the assumption the credential-holder count above exists to test, and it is the assumption every other pay site makes silently.
What you need before you start
- A bachelor's degree with science prerequisites
- Documented direct patient-care hours — programmes commonly ask for 1,000 or more
- A place on an ARC-PA accredited programme
- A pass in the PANCE
Do not do this if
- you have no patient-care hours yet — that requirement is the real barrier and it is usually a year or more of paid work before you can apply
- you are choosing it over medicine purely on length; the scope of practice is different, not smaller-but-otherwise-identical
