Mjera je nepostojanje bilo kakvog zapisa o zaradu za cijelu godinu - bez plaće na W-2, bez pozitivnog samozapošljavanja na poreznoj prijavi. Niko u ovim podacima nije bio pitao da li žele posao. Ko je računan, a ko nije

Samo ljudi koji su uzeli federalnu studentsku pomoć. Kohorta je sastavljena od federalnog sistema studentskih kredita i stipendija, tako da su oni koji su završili studij i sami platili odsutni. To je otprilike polovina američkih studenata. Da li nedostajuća polovina radi bolje ili lošije nije objavljeno, i to je najveća stvar koju ne znamovim brojkama.

Ljudi koji još uvijek studiraju nisu u nijednoj koloni. Kako čitati dvije kolone novca

Plaće su samo za preživjele, i to je poenta. To je mediana za ljude u istoj kohorti koji su radili - oni u drugoj koloni nisu u njoj. Svaki median na svakoj stranici za plaće je sastavljen na taj način; skoro nijedna od njih ne prikazuje kolonu pored nje. Čitanje ove dvije zajedno je jedini način na koji broj plaća ima ikakvo značenje: visoka mediana pored visoke stope neradnog stanja je program u kojem ljudi koji dobro rade i značajan udio ne rade.

Dužnička kolona je pod, a ne cijena. To je srednji dug federalnog kredita koji se nosi po završetku - ono što su ljudi stvarno posudili od vlade. Isključuje stipendije, štednju, porodični novac, privatne kredite i troškove života, tako da je stvarni trošak svakog programa ovdje veći od prikazanog broja, za iznos koji niko ne objavljuje. To je također i srednja vrijednost među institucijama koje izvještavaju o jednom, što nije isto kao srednja vrijednost među studentima.

Četiri godine su prerano za neke od njih, a ni za jednu nije kasno. Za diplomu, četiri godine je stabilna karijera. Za medicinu je to sredina rezidencije, zbog čega medicinski redovi pokazuju zaradu daleko ispod onoga što će ti doktori na kraju zaraditi - ta cifra je stvarna, to je jednostavno mjerenje dna krivulje.
