Kuka lasketaan ja kuka ei
Vain liittovaltion opintotukea saaneet. Kovertti on rakennettu liittovaltion opiskelijalaina- ja apurahajärjestelmästä, joten oman tiensä maksaneet kokonaiset ovat poissa. Se on noin puolet yhdysvaltalaisista perustutkinnon suorittaneista. Puuttuvaa puolta ei julkaista, ja se on suurin yksittäinen asia, jota emme tiedä näistä luvuista.
Opiskelijat eivät ole kumpaakaan. Poikamiehen ja suoraan maisterin tutkinnon suorittanut on suljettu pois sekä työnteosta että työn tekemättä jättämisestä, mikä on oikein: työtä ei ole jäänyt löytämättä, ei ole etsitty. Miten lukea kaksi rahasaraketta
Palkansaaja on selviytyjä, ja se on asian ydin. Se on saman kohortin työntekijöiden mediaani – toisessa palstassa olevat eivät ole siinä. Jokainen mediaani jokaisella palkkasivustolla on rakennettu siten; lähes kukaan heistä ei näytä palstaa sen vieressä. Näiden kahden yhdessäolon lukeminen on ainoa tapa, jolla palkkasumma merkitsee mitään: korkea mediaani korkean työkyvyn rinnalla on ohjelma, jossa ihmiset, jotka tekevät sen hyvin ja mielekäs osuus, eivät tee sitä.
Velkasarake on kerros, ei hinta. Se on liittovaltion lainavelan mediaani, joka on maksettu loppuun – mitä valtiolta on todellisuudessa lainattu.
