National EMT certification (NREMT)

The fastest credential in emergency medicine and the clearest example of the problem this site exists to show: far more people hold it than are employed doing the work, and the pay is below the typical American job.

The National Registry publishes its exam fee but not the cost of the course, and federal programme-level data groups EMT training inside a broad allied-health code alongside unrelated programmes. Course prices are set by hundreds of community colleges, fire academies and private providers, and many students pay nothing because a fire department or ambulance service sponsors them. There is no defensible national figure, so there is none here.

EMT courses typically run one semester — roughly 150 to 200 hours of instruction — which is why this is the quickest licensed route into clinical work anywhere on this site.

Certification runs two years and is renewed through continuing education or by re-examination.

404,026 people holding a current National Registry EMT certification

The National Registry defines this as the unique number of individuals holding a current National Registry certification at EMT level. It updates DAILY, so the figure here is the value on the date shown and will have moved since. It is not the same as state EMS licensure: some states license EMTs without requiring National Registry certification, which pushes this count below the number of people licensed to work as EMTs, while other holders keep the certification without ever working in EMS, which pushes it up.

分计: people holding a current National Registry EMT certification = 404,026 (Standing count of people holding the credential, National Registry dashboard, retrieved 26 July 2026) · National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, National Registry Data Dashboard · 视图

A large share of the unaccounted-for holders are firefighters and police officers, for whom EMT certification is required or standard but whose jobs federal data files under a different occupation entirely. That share is not published anywhere, which is precisely why the gap below has to be read as a ceiling.
