Airline transport pilot certificate (ATP)

The certificate every airline captain must hold. The FAA counts holders precisely — certificate plus valid medical — which makes the gap against airline employment unusually well measured.

Almost all flight training happens outside the federal student-aid system, so no government dataset records what it costs. The published numbers in circulation come from flight schools quoting their own prices, which is marketing rather than data. The FAA sets the hour requirement — 1,500 flight hours for the unrestricted certificate — and what those hours cost depends entirely on how you build them.

The binding requirement is 1,500 flight hours for the unrestricted certificate, reduced to 1,000 or 1,250 for graduates of approved degree programmes. Most people build those hours over years while working as flight instructors.

The certificate does not expire, but the medical certificate does, and losing it ends the career.

Àwọn àwọn: FAA counts an airman as active only when they hold both the certificate and a valid medical certificate, so lapsed and medically disqualified pilots are already excluded — which makes this a tighter count than most credential registries. Pilots are classed by their HIGHEST certificate, so nobody here is also counted among commercial pilots. It includes 1,795 holders whose airline transport rating is for helicopters only.

Àwọn àwọn àgbèwọlé: holders of an active airline transport pilot certificate = 181,742 (Standing count of people holding the credential, as at 31 December 2025) · FAA, US Civil Airmen Statistics 2025, Table 4 — Estimated Active Pilot Certificates Held · Àwọn ìṣàfihàn

Airline pilots are one of the few groups where the gap is easy to read: the certificate is held for life once earned, so it accumulates retired pilots, while the medical requirement removes those who can no longer fly. Corporate, cargo and government pilots also hold it and are counted under other occupations.
