Architect licence
A licence that takes an average of twelve years to earn from the day you start the path — and which more than a third of people who start never finish.

This is the bachelor's-degree route. The master's route costs more — federal data puts the middle half of graduate architecture debt at roughly $27,000 to $63,000, from a much smaller sample. Neither figure includes the exam fees, the NCARB record fees or the years of documented experience the licence also requires. That range is median cumulative FEDERAL LOAN DEBT at completion, not a tuition sticker price and not total cost. It is what completers actually borrowed, so it excludes grants, savings, family money, employer funding and living costs — which makes it a FLOOR on what the credential costs, never a ceiling. The low and high figures are the 25th and 75th percentiles across the institutions that report a figure for this programme, so a quarter of institutions sit below the low end. College Scorecard pools two award years into each figure; the release used here is dated 10 June 2026.
NCARB reports the average time from starting the licensure path to becoming licensed as 12.3 years. That is not twelve years of tuition: it is an accredited degree, thousands of hours of documented experience and a six-division exam, taken at whatever pace life allows. NCARB also reports that 37% of the people who started the path thirteen years ago had stopped pursuing a licence by 2025.
Each state renews separately, and architects practising across state lines maintain reciprocal licences in every one of them.

123,398 licensed architects in the United States
People, not licences. NCARB reports these 123,398 architects as holding a further 146,321 reciprocal out-of-state licences between them, so the licence-record count is roughly 269,700 — more than double. Using the licence count as the denominator would halve the apparent share employed and would be wrong, so we use the individual count. The figure comes from NCARB's annual survey of all 55 architectural registration boards. 3,488 people were newly licensed in 2025.

CIP 04.02 is architecture proper — the accredited professional degree route. It excludes interior architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning, which have their own codes. It is one of the cleaner codes on this page. Note that the degree is only the first of the three requirements for a licence: the experience hours and the six-division examination come after, and NCARB reports the average path from start to licence at 12.3 years.
This measures architecture graduates, not licensed architects. Given that NCARB reports the average path to licensure at 12.3 years and that more than a third of people who start it stop, a graduate four years out is usually not yet licensed — which is why this rate is far better than the licence figures on this page might lead you to expect.

- A NAAB-accredited architecture degree
- Documented experience hours under a licensed architect
- All six divisions of the Architect Registration Examination
如果
- you want a defined finish line — the average is over a decade and more than a third of starters stop
- you assume the degree is the licence; it is the first of three requirements
