The credential that separates a dietitian from anyone calling themselves a nutritionist — and which since 2024 needs a master's degree, raising the cost of entry without moving the pay.

O que é esa cifra de custo, e o que non é
This is the master's route, which is now the only route. It rests on a thin base — only about twenty institutions report a graduate debt figure for this programme code — so treat it as indicative of the level rather than precise. That range is median cumulative FEDERAL LOAN DEBT at completion, not a tuition sticker price and not total cost. It is what completers actually borrowed, so it excludes grants, savings, family money, employer funding and living costs — which makes it a FLOOR on what the credential costs, never a ceiling. The low and high figures are the 25th and 75th percentiles across the institutions that report a figure for this programme, so a quarter of institutions sit below the low end. College Scorecard pools two award years into each figure; the release used here is dated 10 June 2026.
Since 1 January 2024 the credential requires a master's degree, so the route is a bachelor's in dietetics or an equivalent, then a master's and a supervised practice programme of 1,000 hours, then the registration examination. The supervised practice place is the bottleneck, and it is competitive.
Registration is maintained through a five-year continuing professional education cycle and an annual fee.

O que inclúe esa conta: Individuals currently on the Commission on Dietetic Registration's register as an RD or RDN. Dietetic technicians are a separate and much smaller credential (3,303) and are not in this number. The page CDR publishes it on updates continuously rather than annually, so this is the value on the date shown and will have moved. CDR publishes no split between people practising and people keeping the credential current, and no US/non-US split.

The gap here contains a group this site can name precisely: people who hold the credential and work in food service management, public health, industry, research or teaching, all of which federal employment data files under other occupations. It also contains people keeping the registration current while not practising, which CDR does not separate.
