The federal programme code here, CIP 51.02, covers speech-language pathology together with audiology. At master's level it is overwhelmingly speech-language pathology, because audiology moved to a clinical doctorate, so the blending is mild — but it is blending. That range is median cumulative FEDERAL LOAN DEBT at completion, not a tuition sticker price and not total cost. It is what completers actually borrowed, so it excludes grants, savings, family money, employer funding and living costs — which makes it a FLOOR on what the credential costs, never a ceiling. The low and high figures are the 25th and 75th percentiles across the institutions that report a figure for this programme, so a quarter of institutions sit below the low end. College Scorecard pools two award years into each figure; the release used here is dated 10 June 2026.

Two years of full-time graduate study after a bachelor's degree, then a supervised clinical fellowship of about nine months and the Praxis examination before full licensure.

State licences renew every one to two years; ASHA certification requires 30 hours of continuing education every three years and an annual fee.

216,272 ASHA-certified speech-language pathologists in the United States

People, from ASHA's year-end count of 218,646 speech-language pathologists, less the 2,374 based outside the United States. Audiologists are counted separately and are not in this number. One caveat travels with it: ASHA is a membership and certification body, not a licensing board, so this is a count of people holding its certificate rather than of people licensed by a state. The two overlap heavily — the certificate is the usual basis for state licensure — but they are not the same set, and it includes people certified and not working.

ASHA-certified speech-language pathologists in the United States = 216,272 (Standing count of people holding the credential, as at 31 December 2025) · ASHA, 2025 Member and Affiliate Profile, Tables 1 and 3 · 视图

This is one of the tighter pairings on the site, and the reason is that almost everyone who practises holds the ASHA certificate — it is the usual basis for a state licence rather than a parallel credential. The remainder is mostly people certified and not currently working, plus a smaller number practising under a state licence without maintaining ASHA certification, who push the true figure the other way.

CIP 51.02 covers speech-language pathology and audiology together. At master's level it is overwhelmingly speech-language pathology, because audiology moved to a clinical doctorate; at bachelor's level it is a pre-professional degree that qualifies you for neither on its own, which is worth knowing before enrolling.

  • A bachelor's degree, with prerequisite coursework if it was in another field
  • A place on an accredited master's programme
  • A supervised clinical fellowship
  • A pass in the Praxis examination in speech-language pathology

如果

  • you need to start earning immediately — the clinical fellowship year is paid, but at a fraction of the licensed rate
